Do I have to deregister in Germany (Abmeldung) when I move to Cyprus?

Short answer

Yes, if you give up your German home and do not take a new one in Germany: within two weeks after moving out, and at the earliest one week before. But deregistering does not by itself end German tax residence.

For tax, what counts is whether you keep a home in Germany in circumstances that show you will keep and use it (Wohnsitz), or spend more than six months there in a row (gewöhnlicher Aufenthalt). A flat you keep for your own use can keep you fully taxable in Germany even after the Abmeldung.

Purely private stays, such as visits and holidays, of up to a year do not create a habitual abode.
