Do we keep Kindergeld after moving to Cyprus?

Short answer

Usually not, unless you keep a home or habitual abode in Germany, are treated as fully taxable in Germany on application, or still work or draw a pension there. A family living in Cyprus with no German job or pension normally falls under Cypriot family benefits.

Under the EU's priority rules, the country where you work pays first, then the country that pays your pension, then the country where you live; the other country tops up any difference.

Kindergeld is €259 per child per month in 2026.
