Can I get an S1 for healthcare in Cyprus if I move now?
Short answer
Yes, if you receive the UK State Pension. The S1 lets you register with Cyprus's General Healthcare System (GHS, also called GESY), with the UK paying for your care. You cannot have one if you also receive a Cyprus state pension.
You can apply up to 90 days before you move. Once you have it and are registered as a resident, you register the S1 with the GHS and then choose a family doctor. As for everyone in the system, some treatment carries a co-payment.
Without an S1, someone from outside the EU is covered by the GHS only with permanent residence or the social insurance rights that come with working in Cyprus. A retiree on a visitor permit without an S1 will usually rely on private health insurance, which the permit asks for anyway.
