Do I still pay UK tax after moving to Cyprus?
Short answer
Not on your worldwide income once you are non-resident under the UK's Statutory Residence Test. Income from the UK, such as rent from a UK property, can still be taxed there, and the UK–Cyprus tax treaty decides who taxes what.
The test counts your days in the UK in each tax year. 183 days or more makes you UK resident. Fewer than 16 makes you non-resident, or fewer than 46 if you were not UK resident in any of the three previous tax years. Full-time work abroad also makes you non-resident if you spend fewer than 91 days in the UK and work there on fewer than 31. In between, your ties to the UK decide.
Tell HMRC you are leaving: on form P85 if you do not file Self Assessment, or in the residence pages of your Self Assessment return if you do.
In the year you leave, split-year treatment can treat you as non-resident from the day you go: for example, when you give up your UK home, spend fewer than 16 days in the UK for the rest of the year and become tax resident in Cyprus within six months.
