What happens if I move back to the UK within five years of leaving for Cyprus?

Short answer

The UK's temporary non-residence rules can tax, when you return, some income and gains you received while abroad: capital gains, pension lump sums and dividends from your own close company among them.

The rules apply if you were solely UK resident in at least four of the seven tax years before you left and you come back within five years. To be outside them, you stay non-resident for more than five years.

For people returning on or after 6 April 2026, a dividend from a close company (one controlled by five or fewer people, or by its directors) received while abroad is caught in full, including profits the company made after you left. Tax paid in Cyprus on the same income is credited.

If you plan to take dividends from your own company while living in Cyprus, decide how long you will stay before you decide what to pay out.
